Taking Back Islam

Attention brothers and sisters
this is your sister speaking
It is with grave seriousness that I inform you
that this Ummah has been hijacked
no no
we’ve gotta find another word.
It’s been usurped,
seized,
commandeered.

I would have informed you earlier
but so many seemed to think that ignoring it
was the way to handle the situation.
We got a wake-up call long ago but kept
hitting the snooze button until the alarm
got too loud to ignore.

Time to stand up and be counted
brothers and sisters
time to come out of the woodwork
and stand our ground

Time to have jealousy for this diyn
time to say we’d like to keep our tradition, thank you.
Time to close the doors to journalist ijtihad,
to the cyber muftis and insta-sheikhs.

Time to admit this isn’t a diyn of DIY,
or an Ummah of Iconoclasts.
You can burn your copies of “How to Make Your Own Fiqh” over here.
Time to realize it’s the world that’s out of step with Shari’a,
and not the other way around.
Time to say that riba is not allowed,
dating is not allowed.
Don’t like it?
Get over it.

Time for the brothers to return to their hijab,
wild oats can be sown in dhikr and fasting.
The women have been holding up our honor for far too long,
it’s time to share half the burden.

Time to get beyond admiring fist-length beards and sitting on the floor
and imitate the heart of the Sunnah
gentility and night prayers,
humor and istighfar,
‘cuz without any of this,
sitting on the floor and eating with your hands
means nothing beyond
not sitting at a table and not using a spoon.

Time to polish our hearts with La illaha il Allah,
time to stop being ashamed of ourselves
time to stop arguing with people who want us to follow their millah
time to gather for dhikr as easily as
we gather for political fundraisers.

Brothers and Sisters,
this is your sister speaking.
This Ummah has been usurped,

hijacked.
Time to stand up and
be counted.
Time to stand up and
be real men and women.
Time to have jealousy for this diyn.
Time to take back Islam.
